What are blinkies? I keep hearing buzz about parenting blinkies and before that, trying to conceive blinkies.

But what exactly are these ‘blinkies’?

At first, I thought that these are special kinds of babies or something. “Why would they call their babies blinkies?”, I thought to myself. I did a couple of Google search about ‘Parenting Blinkies” or ‘Trying to conceive blinkies” and found out what these actually are.

Babytalkzone even has a dedicated sub domain for blinkies, and no, it’s not babies afterall. Blinkies are just… images that sort of blinks.

BabyandBump also has a forum dedicated to blinkies.

If you’re into blogging these are sometines called badges or the images you sometimes put on your blogs if you joined some directory submission sites like TopOfBlogs and Wikio and others.

Here are some samples of parenting blinkies or whatever is written on it:

You can tons of it here.
Enjoy!

The topic is of great importance and the message is clear.
This book(let) is not widely useful with very young kids, but I like to have the non-violent communication luggage on board early on; I am sure it will come in handy once my kids grow to be the age that I be tempted to threaten or bribe them! However, I think I need to read some more of Rosenberg’s to fully understand his paradigm and communication guidelines.

To start off, here’s a graph that you can use to monitor if your child has the ideal weight height ratio of a child.

Many parents are looking for answers as to how can their child reach the max potential height specially if they have a son and believes that being taller has advantages in life.

Check some of the advice of parents like yourself regarding the ideal height of a child as they grow up.

Best Food for Height Gain

You may want to be aware of the food your child wants to eat. There are several food groups and one of them will help your toddler reach his maximum potential height.

Foods that are rich in different nutrients are said to be the best height increase food. Vitamin A, protein, and zinc are said to affect the most in most of the height growth process, this is according to many research and studies conducted.

But you’ll still need a balanced diet of calorie and others nutrition such as other vitamins, calcium, minerals, fat, and fiber to maintain a healthy physic and support your height growth. You must also remember that too much is not good as well as too less. So keep a balanced diet is recommended.

Sleep and Exercise can Increase Height

This is applicable to both adults and kids. Sleep and good exercise are proven facts that it help in increasing height. Toddlers needs at least 8 hours of sound sleep. For exercise, let them play and do some physical activities.

Most toddlers take at least one naps during the day at this age and are able to sleep all night (for 11-12 hours). If not, check to make sure that your toddler has a good bedtime routine and has developed the proper sleep associations.

Couple of years ago, I wrote 5 Tips in Teaching Your child the ABC. That tips and techniques that I shared there are based on my personal experience with my son, Matt. Those exact same techniques are still timely and applicable to day. With that, how can we teach a child to read? Check the tips and others in the rest of this post.

Like I said, the same old tips still applies:

Start early

Use props and posters

Use video or other educational DVDs

Repetition

Rewards and complements

The tips above are guaranteed to work because I used them myself. For use to teach our child to read, we must introduce them to the alphabet and the sound of the individual letters that will make up the words.

Teaching Alphabet Letter Sounds

How to teach a child to read? Before a toddler can read, every child must know the sounds of the alphabet letters. He must be able to recall them quickly – he sees the letter and says the sound without hesitation.

First thing’s first, teach your child to read the ABC. Point to each letter and ask your child to, “Tell me what this letter says.”

You can create (help him) his own alphabet book. I usually buy my toddler some notebooks and pencils and he’ll scribble the alphabet for long hours. Staple some pieces of paper together and ask your child to draw pictures of items that begin with the sound of each alphabet letter.

When you are teaching a letter sound, be careful not to add an “uh” sound at the end of the letter. For example, letter s should sound like a snake hissing, with no throat sound. Letter s says ’sss,’ not ’suh.’ If your child learns letters ‘c’, ‘a’, ‘t’ as sounding ‘kuh,’ ‘aah,’ and ‘tuh,’ those sounds will not come together to say cat!

Children have different learning rates. Your child may need lots of direct instruction to learn the alphabet sounds. Don’t forget, he will learn letter sounds more quickly with a short daily review.

After the highly successful blog post about baby monitor, I decided to write something more about it and this time actually endorse the best baby monitor yet.. after giving a not so bias review about it.

BabySense V baby Monitor Review… Buy it!

For a little less than $200, you are giving your baby your love, heart, or eye, or attention by using the Babysense V baby monitor. The BabySense V is a unique Baby Monitor that senses baby’s movement and breathing through the mattress during sleep. That’s how powerful and sensitive the device is at the same time!

The Babysense V has all the important feature that a baby monitor should have but this one is far more advance! It monitors the baby’s movement and breathing! That is super sensitive!

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare – your baby stops breathing in the night and you don’t notice until it’s too late. The Babysense V is medically proven to help to prevent this by monitoring both your baby’s breathing and movement, and alerting you if it spots any irregularities.

It will sound a loud alarm to alert parents if baby stops breathing for more than 20 seconds or if the breathing rate drops below 10 breaths a minute. It comes with instructions that explain what you should do if the alarm sounds.

If breathing sounds are normal it displays a flashing green light to give you peace of mind.

How Babysense V works

The operation of Babysense V is by using a large, passive sensor pads that are highly sensitive to even the slightest motion a baby makes. These Babysense V pads constantly monitor a baby’s every movement.

The motion patterns are transmitted to a compact microprocessor, the Babysense V control unit, where they trigger a flashing green light that is clearly visible from a distance. The flashing green light is the signal that all is well, providing a parent or caretaker with peace of mind. If, for whatever reason, the baby’s movement stops for 20 seconds, or slows to less than 10 movements per minute, an audible alarm will sound. On hearing this alarm, a parent or caretaker is alerted to come to the aid of the sleeping baby.

Babysense V is not a medical device. Premature and high-risk infants must be under supervision of a doctor or health professional.

Buy Babysense V at Amazon

Amazon is by far, the most trusted e-commerce store in the internet today! Secure transaction and fast delivery is what Amazon is all about. Rest assured that you important information will be safe!

For kids, a few extra pounds may invite trouble from the schoolyard bully. This is what the researchers have discovered that I recently read.

The study shows or it suggested that just by being overweight, a child has a very big chance of getting bullied. Although there are many factors that play a role of getting bullied, like gender, face or family related, being overweight is still the main reason. Being overweight or obese trumps all those other factors when it comes to aggressive behavior from other children.

The study found that being overweight increased the risk of being the target of bullying by 63 percent.

“One of the reasons we started this study is that obesity is so much more common today. Now that about half of kids are overweight or obese, it doesn’t make you such an outlier anymore, so we thought maybe kids wouldn’t be bullied for being overweight anymore,” said study author Dr. Julie Lumeng, an assistant research scientist at the Center for Human Growth and Development at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She added that the researchers also hoped they might be able to find some protective factors against being bullied, such as doing well in school.

“What we found, much to our dismay, was that nothing seemed to matter. If you were obese, you were more likely to be bullied, no matter what,” she said.

Results of the study will be published in the June issue of Pediatrics, but were released online May 3.

The study included 821 boys and girls from a nationally representative sample of children selected from 10 sites around the United States. Bullying behaviors were assessed in third, fifth and sixth grades. The youngsters were mostly white, half of them were male and 15 percent were overweight in the third grade.

By sixth grade, teachers reported that 34 percent of the study children had been bullied, and mothers reported that 45 percent of the children had been bullied, while 25 percent of the children themselves said they had been bullied.

Previous research has shown that boys, minorities and children from low-income groups are more likely to be bullied, so the researchers took these factors into account to see if they made a difference. The study authors also considered a child’s social skills and academic achievement in their analysis.

“No matter how much we retested, the findings were very robust. Obese kids are more likely to be bullied,” said Lumeng.

She said that one of the reasons she believes the findings were so consistent is that prejudice against overweight or obese people is “so pervasive that it’s acceptable.” But, she added, “Obesity is really complex. It’s not all about willpower. It’s a brain-based disorder, and I hope that message becomes clearer.”

Dana Rofey, an assistant professor with the Weight Management and Wellness Center at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, said she wasn’t surprised by the findings. “Bullying is the most common psychosocial complaint that our patients present with,” she said.

“For parents and pediatricians, one of the issues our study raises is that if you’re caring for a child who’s overweight, you need to be alert to this and you might want to gently bring it up with the child. Ask, ‘How are things at school going?’ or ‘Does anyone ever say something that makes you feel bad?’ because this may be an issue that’s difficult for kids to bring up,” said Lumeng.

If your child lets you know that he or she is being bullied, Lumeng said your first response should be to validate your child’s feelings and let them know that it’s not OK for someone to treat them like that.

What to do next can be tricky, agreed both experts.

“Be supportive, and let your child know that you’ll help them. Consult with your child and ask how he or she would like you to get involved,” advised Rofey. Many youngsters may ask their parents to take a hands-off approach, she said. But she recommends setting some guidelines. “Say something like, ‘It seems you have this under control right now, but let’s keep talking and checking in about it.’”

Rofey also recommends teaching your child how to avoid situations that might lead to teasing or bullying, and talking with your child about how to reach out to adults if they need to. Depending on the situation, she said that parents may need to step in and advocate for their children at the school. But, she advised always letting your children know what steps you’ll be taking.

This is not new to anyone who had done their Google search about the topic. These are just the same tips that you can find in various websites that I consolidated here for my own quick reference.

Tonight, my little boy had an unfortunate accident in the bathroom. He slipped and bump his head causing an inch long wound. We were terrified! It felt like a dream/nightmare! I wanted to wake up but I know I would not, I know that this is real and that I should not panic.

We brought our son to the nearest hospital/clinic. He got a stitch. He was crying during that time! His crying was unbearable to me and I could not do anything.

How to Childproof a Bathroom

Secure all lower bathroom cabinets with safety latches.

Store medication, vitamins, hair bleach, hair dye, bathroom cleanser and other hazardous solutions in a locked cabinet or in another room.

Be sure to keep bathroom door shut and use doorknob safety guards to prevent children from entering the bathroom.

Keep toilet seat lids down at all times; lock them with special lid locks.

Use nonskid mats or adhesive safety strips in the bathtub and shower to prevent slipping.

Install electrical outlets protected by ground-fault circuit breakers to prevent electric shock.

Set your water heater at 120 degrees F or install anti-scald devices on faucets.

Make sure your baby doesn’t find his way into the bathroom unsupervised by installing a hook-and-eye lock high on the outside of the door or by placing a childproof cover over the doorknob.

Remember to keep the toilet lid down, and install a toilet lock to prevent your baby from lifting the lid. Small children are curious, uncoordinated, and extremely top-heavy. If your baby leans over to peer into the toilet bowl, he could easily lose his balance, fall in headfirst, and drown in as little as an inch of water.

Put razors, scissors, nail clippers, tweezers, and other sharp utensils in a locked cabinet or high up in a linen closet well out of your baby’s reach.

Unplug your blow-dryer, curling iron, and any other appliances that create heat, and put them away after each use to prevent burns.

Keep all cosmetics and medications — including prescription drugs, antacids, aspirin, and mouthwash (which contains more alcohol than wine does) — in a high cabinet secured with a child-safety lock. Even medications that have safety caps, which are only child-resistant and not childproof, need to be placed out of reach.

Treat all vitamins and other supplements with the same caution you’d use with medications, storing them in a high locked cabinet. Iron pills and multivitamins containing iron are poisonous to young children. Minerals, herbal remedies, and other supplements are hazardous, too.

Don’t keep anything plugged in near the sink or bathtub. Water conducts electricity, so if a hair dryer fell into the tub while you were giving your baby a bath, it could electrocute you both. To be extra safe, make sure all electrical outlets near the sink or tub are protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), an inexpensive device that senses a change in the current and quickly stops the flow of electricity. GFCIs are standard in most new homes to comply with construction codes, but if you have an older home, an electrician may need to replace the bathroom outlets.

Set your hot water heater no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius). A lower water temperature helps ensure safe bathing by reducing the chance of scalding (it takes just three seconds for a child to get a serious burn). You can also install an anti-scalding device on your faucets.

Place a nonslip rubber mat in the bathtub and a nonslip bath mat on the floor next to the tub to prevent falls.

Put a soft plastic or rubber guard over the tub spout to protect your baby from accidentally bumping his head.

Never leave your baby alone in the bathtub, not even for a moment. If the doorbell rings, scoop him up in a towel and take him with you. Bring your cell phone or a cordless phone into the bathroom if you feel you can’t miss a call.

Teach your baby to stay seated in the tub at all times. If he’s the active type, you may have to repeat this message many times before it sticks, but his safety makes the effort worth it.

Having an extra activity after school is a good thing for any child. These kind of toddler activities are an excellent source for an extra knowledge and fun!. So, having an extracurricular activity for your child is almost a must!

What if your son’s school does not offer any extracurricular activities. You are probably be worried of depriving your child of, like I said before, all that extra knowledge and fun. What should you do?

Most of us parents think that after school activities are always thought in schools. Well, it’s not. After school extracurricular activities need not be taught in a school-like environment by professional teachers in a structured and timely manner.

There is a lot YOU can do to support your child’s academic, physical and social development. Do not be too concerned about formal programs, as many of our children are already over-scheduled.

Obviously, school is top priority for children. They need to go to school, and finish their homework. They should then do their daily reading or writing work etc. This may take about 30-60 minutes. In the course of his daily work, your child may develop certain academic preferences and interests. In that case, you can try and find a program in a college or a community center that will help him and encourage him. In the age of the
Internet, information is really not a rarity. Allow him to use the net to find more information about thing that he likes. Encouraging the child to do independent research to gain in-depth knowledge is something that no
formal program does.

The first thing that a parent will be worried about is that their child may not have the social life. If you are concerned about it, enroll him or her in a club. There are all sorts of clubs available for kids. Or they can visit public libraries or even the theater, if your child is interested. It is not necessary for your child to make
friends with children his own age. A parent-child book club is another interesting option. If you can round up a number of like-minded children and their parents, you may well start your own after-school program… but of course, that is a little leaning on the side of the parent and not on the child.

There are instances that there is no organized group activity. Another good place to check out is your community. Many children love to get involved in social problems. They get their first real taste of suffering, charity and community help from such experiences. Volunteering for clean-up sessions, adult education programs etc could be a real eye-opener for your child. The lessons thus learnt are invaluable.

If physical activity or the lack of it is your major concern, enroll your child for some dancing classes. If organized sports are impossible to get, try to enroll her in a gym. She may find friends there and may take to the treadmill.

Your child does not necessarily have to be a part of an organized group to benefit from after-school ctivities. There are various avenues open in front of you. Roping in the enthusiasm of your children in daily household
activities like cooking, cleaning etc can also provide them with a refreshing extracurricular experience. Moreover, it will improve family ties too.

Many parents are worrying that today’s kids are no longer interested in books and in reading. It may sound true in some way, that they maybe swaying away from books but with today’s modern technology, ebooks is a viable substitute for physical books. But still, with so many things, so many activities to do online, it may also be true that kids of today, the toddlers and teens are reading less and less books.

In a world that is slowly but surely turning away from books and getting glued to monitors or television screens and like I said before, the internet… the importance of having a passion or developing wants for reading cannot be overlooked. Reading is a habit and should be established when the child is relatively young.

As a parent we are the first person to show our kids the value and importance of reading. We must tell them and make them understand that reading can broaden their mind. What can we do to foster this habit and add reading to their daily activities?

Enroll your child for reading classes

There are many well structured after school reading classes that aim to draw the children to books. They help kids with diction, idioms and phrases. For young children, these classes can be fun with animated characters and pictures. Illustrated picture books, rhymes, silly songs and pretend stories all attract the young child. Use creativity to capture the child’s vivid imagination.

Pique your child’s interest
If your child has a favorite character, pick a series of books that features this character. For my son, it was Spiderman. Thanks to friendly neighborhood spidey, my son latched on to comics fairly early in his childhood.

Build a home-library
A skill like reading cannot be learnt in isolation. Do not leave all the hard work to the after school program. Pick up books that you think your child will like. The Internet is also a rich resource of reading games
that will attract little children to the fine art of reading.

The suggestions listed above pertains only to physical books. There are many other ways to give the kids interest in reading if we are to use the internet. Wikipedia is the number one website for information and for kids to know and acquaint them in Wikipedia and other rich of information website will do wonders in their growing up years.
