That’s what I have been searching lately, tips on how to effectively teach toddlers simple arithmetic such as addition or subtraction. My four year old is still busy writing down alphabets and words. He also can count to 50 (or more). Since I felt like letters and words and alphabets are no longer a challenge to him, I decided to try and teach him mathematics. But we both are struggling.
I remember when my son was learning the alphabet. He was less than 2 years old then. I just realized that learning numbers addition is harder to teach that alphabet.. well, it probably depends on the child.
I have tried the tips in learning the alphabet from experience in teaching addition to my son but I still feel that he is struggling to learn the concept of addition. The tips in learning the alphabet that i applied are, repetition, watching educational DVD, using props and posters, rewards and complements and still my Matt doesn’t want to do addition.
Addition is one of the first mathematical concepts that children learn and one of the fundamentals of all math study. If you know how to teach addition, you can help your child succeed in school.
Old Fashion Tips in Teaching Addition
- Abacus addition
Addition on the abacus involves registering the numbers on the beads in the straight-forward left-to-right sequence they are written down in. As long as the digits are placed correctly, and the carry’s noted properly, the answer to the operation immediately presents itself right on the abacus.
That’s a little hard to comprehend and I’m sure a lot harder to explain to the kids. What Abacus basically is to count the beads and put them beads together to get the sum.
- Line Number addition
Line number method of teaching addition in toddlers is probably the most famous and easy way to teach addition to kids. The child basically draws a line with equal division that represents a single digit. To further illustrate check out the figure below:
