Aftermath of Disaster

Today’s episode of Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs show featured workers cleaning up houses that have been left derelict over a year after a storm.

After such a disaster happened, a lot of houses were destroyed. Not only did the storm leave physical damage, it also destroyed lives and left a lot of smart professionals unemployed. The town had to start from scratch all over again and as the host interviewed these men who were cleaning the houses, he discovered that most of them were professionals. There were english teachers, private detectives, and others and all of them have adapted to the town’s situation.

It’s really sad to experience the ruins of the aftermath but it’s inspiring to see people, survivors, picking up the pieces of their lives and adapting to the new situation and not at all giving up on life.

Junk food!

If you watch TV, you’ll no doubt notice that there are more than quite a share of commercials of junk food that kids endorse. And because the endorsers are kids, you might find yourself being persuaded by your child to buy and try the product as well.

Giving kids junk food for me is alright as long as the amount is being carefully monitored. Kids are growing so of course it is imperative that as parents, we maintain the responsibility of ensuring that they get the right nutrition to grow up healthy. The best way to encourage your children of course is to set an example of yourselves.

Everything always starts at home and as long as you eat well and right at home, children will tend to abide to that strictly.

Early Childhood Learning

Learning is at its best when you’re young. Children are much easier to teach because their brains are still developing therefore absorbing information is faster. What you learn during childhood is certainly retained longer than what you learn when older.

Learning how to play music instruments particularly is great if taught during childhood. The knowledge about music will certainly be retained as the child grows and not forgotten unlike learning it when older.

Language is also something that not only can be learned faster while young but will certainly be remembered as the child grows. Personally I have not had any formal education on the different dialects in the Philippines but because I grew up listening to 3 different dialects, learning and speaking them today doesn’t confuse me and comes easily.

Copycat

Copying is a really bad example that we should prevent kids from learning. That in itself is a very idealistic hope but I just really think that copying is really just bad. And what’s worst is when it’s at its most blatant.

An example that I could think of right now off the top of my head is Mike Tompkins who I’ve watched in Youtube. He was the first one to make acapella covers with sounds made from his voice and mouth only and posted it on youtube. But what bothers me is that here comes another person, Peter Hollens, who does the same exact thing with a similar video style. And it’s this only one thing.

There are a whole lot of other examples out there and to me it’s just really not good. Not only does it show lack of originality but a lack of creativity as well.

Sponsor a Child

As parents, we understand the difficulty of raising a child in this world. As children once before ourselves, we know that it would be difficult to grow up without any kind of support from any adult; be it parents or relatives.

Sponsor a Child is a campaign that runs year long and is being hosted by various charities around the world. It gives people the opportunity to help the children of the next generation be well provided and well cared for. These are children who are either orphaned, or come from third world countries where they are deprived of the most basic necessities because they can’t afford it.

I encourage everyone to pitch a hand and support these kinds of projects for a better tomorrow. Find a charity to sponsor a child today!
